Welcome to Acorn!

Donations & Fundraising
Donations & Fundraising Programs The Acorn School for Early Childhood Development is a tax exempt, 501 ( c ) 3 nonprofit organization. Our ability to provide high quality child care services to your family is dependent upon the financial support, and in-kind donations of current and previously enrolled families, grandparents, local businesses, foundations, corporations, city, state, and federal government agencies, and community members. All donations are tax deductible and greatly appreciated. A percentage of the School’s revenue budget each year relies on parent participation in fundraisers such as grocery scrip, personal giving, and workplace giving. You will be asked to support these programs, and we thank you in advance for your support. If you have any questions about Acorn’s fundraising needs, or the individual programs listed here, please see the Executive Director.

Zwaggle

Zwaggle.com is a national network of parents who gather online to share their unwanted things with other families.

How it works:  When you give your gently used things to other families on Zwaggle, you receive points, called  Zoints that you can use to obtain “new” things on the network.  It’s the way families everywhere are saving money, resources, and the environment, while providing their children with the things they want and need.

*From July 10-31, The Acorn School benefits by receiving cash from Zwaggle each time an Acorn family completes a trade.  However, you must be a member of the Acorn Group to do this. You will receive an invite soon which will automatically make you a member of the Acorn Group OR you can join the Acorn Group separately after registering.

Joining the group also serves two more functions: 1) Parents can sort for items just within the Acorn Group, and   2) Items can be made exclusive to the Acorn School parents for a limited time before they are automatically made available to the greater Zwaggle community.

You can also help Acorn anytime by choosing to donate the Zoints you earn to Acorn, just choose Acorn as the Charity you would like to donate to.

Music Camp

Camp Oonie Koonie Cha

This summer, the Mixed Age classroom was lucky enough to attend Camp Oonie Koonie Cha, a music camp put on by Amy Haywood, The Acorn School's music teacher.  Held at the Boulder Valley Church of Christ, the camp was centered around a theme of "the islands."  We sang songs about stinkin' pirates and sweet guava jelly, made instruments from coconuts and bamboo, and learned how sound waves turn into what our ears hear.  The camp culminated in a performance by the children, who sang all the songs they had learned, played their homemade instruments, and acted out the story of Boris Vanderborsch, a swashbucklin' pirate, to rave reviews.  While we returned to school after naptime each day, tired and hungry, the songs and ideas taught at the camp were heard throughout the halls of The Acorn School for weeks after, showing once again, the power of music.

Exciting Classroom Stories

Kindness & Love Jar

Kindness and Love Jar

The Acorn School’s Preschool II class has been working on the alphabet this year, and has come up with some very unique lessons for teaching certain letters, but none as creative and heart-warming as the letters K and L. Hear it from the teachers’, Suzy Evans and Nicole Korpusik, perspective: "It all started with the alphabet. We were thinking of fun ways to help the kids with letter recognition. When we began talking about the letters “K” and “L” we created a “Kindness and Love” jar for the classroom. Whenever any of the children did something kind for one of their friends, they got to put a penny in the jar. In 3 weeks, we had 75 cents; 75 kind acts among twelve 3-4 year olds. Pretty amazing! We decided we would ask for “matching” contributions from the parents in our classroom and then donate the collected amount to Children’s Hospital. In total we raised $257 and are happy to send this contribution to the children at Children’s Hospital in Denver.
We have now decided to make the “Kindness and Love” jar a permanent fixture in our classroom and make a donation every year. The kids are thrilled to see how their kindness to one another has encouraged others to help children in need.”  The donation may be minimal in terms of the dollar amount, but the lessons it hopefully instills in our preschoolers will be a life-long commitment to helping others. We are very proud of our Preschool II children and have learned so much from them through the “Kindness and Love” jar.
